Alternative to Spanking

I received an email from a friend with this little story and photo. It's not about me, obviously, as I don't have a son. Some of you may have already seen it, but I thought it was worth posting. This is a well timed post for me, as Anny has been driving me crazy this week. She's definitely testing her limits. Here's to all you parents in the same boat as me right now, or have been there. If you can handle the suspense, read the email before you check out the photo.

Most of the American populace thinks it improper to spank children, so I have tried other methods to control my kids when they have one of 'those moments.' One that I found effective is for me to just take the child for a car ride and talk. Some say it's the vibration from the car, others say it's the time away from any distractions such as TV, Video Games, Computer, IPod, etc. Either way, my kids usually calm down and stop misbehaving after our car ride together. Eye to eye contact helps a lot, too. I've included a photo below of one of my sessions with my son, in case you would like to use the technique.

Your Friend

  1. That approach pretty much worked for you, except, of course, we used a horse and buggy. Fortunately, you were afraid of horses.

  2. I laughed at this one too! Sure have thought about going "driving" a lot this week. And I've got spring break coming up...10 whole days..oh I don't know how we're gonna survive, today was bad enough :-)

  3. I had to laugh as soon as I scrolled down! I think we really do need alternatives to spanking especially when kids get a little older. With mine it is all psycological. Abbey just take away friends. Hunter, tell him you are disappointed. And Liney could care less what you tell her, or if you spank her so she is my wonder for punishment.

  4. Hi Liz! I saw this post last week and had to laugh because we just had a conversation about spanking. Mike is totally anti after growing up with a mom who spanked a lot... but a police officer in our gospel principles class was commenting on how it's obvious to him that parents don't spank anymore because of the delinquency he sees. Interesting! We decided there is a time and place--like when your child does something life threatening!

Anyway, about the books... do you have a Goodreads account? If not, you should! :) I LOVE it. It keeps track of everything I have and want to read! I just finished "Hunger Games" and I am in the middle of a trio by Nancy Turner beginning with "These is My Words." So good!
